Benchmarks : CompactFlash, DOM ou carte SD ?

Lorsque j'avais montré en vidéo que je remplaçais certains HDD de mes vieux PC par des cartes CompactFlash, certaines personnes dans les commentaires m'avaient proposé comme solution la carte SD. De plus, j'avais eu connaissance de l'existence des DOM après la lecture de divers blogs. Si vous ne voyez pas de quoi je veux parler, il serait plus sage pour vous de consulter cette page avant de continuer. J'ai voulu donc un peu tester tout ça afin de déterminer quelle serait la solution idéale entre les trois. Quelle serait la plus économique, la plus rapide, la plus facile et la plus fiable pour substituer un vieux disque dur dans un ancien ordinateur ?

Les tests



Pour faire ma propre idée, j'ai utilisé 4 PC x86 de ma collection de vieux PC, en partant du 486 jusqu'au Pentium 4, pour voir comment cela se goupille.



Ces tests restent simples et faits avec les choses que j'avais sous la main, je ne suis pas expert en benchmarks. Nous aurons en compétition pour les 4 PC à chaque fois 5 supports de stockage :

  • Une carte CF Transcend 4Go 133x "normale"
  • Une carte CF Cisco (Unigen rebadgée) 2Go "industrielle" (UGB30STC2000Z4)
  • Un DOM Kingspec Industrial 4Go (livré pré-formaté en FAT32, 3.66Go utilisables)
  • Une carte SDHC Samsung 16Go EVO sur KTC FC1307A.
  • Une carte SDXC Transcend 64Go 300x 45MB/s sur KTC FC1307A.


Les 2 cartes SD ont été reformatées en une partition primaire de 8Go - 8032Mo pour la compatibilité avec les BIOS/DOS.

Je vais partir de ce PC car c'est le premier qui j'ai converti à la sauce CF. Il va me servir de point de départ pour cette expérience.

Avec DS32 on peut s'apercevoir que le débit de la carte reste stable, c'est très linéaire, stockage Flash oblige.




ATTO et Roadkil indiquent un débit maximum de 14-15Mo/s, ce qui parait normal compte tenu du mode de transfert en Word DMA mode 2 qui est de 16.6Mo/s en théorique.

Idem débits très stables mais elle fait nettement mieux que la Transcend vu précédemment surtout sur les petites écritures sur les fichiers (ATTO et Roadkil). Cette carte est donc à privilégier. :)

RAS avec DS32, même comportement qu'avec les cartes CF.




Résultats que je qualifierais de vraiment bizarres. Selon la taille des blocs le DOM ne réagit pas de la même manière et ce sur 2 logiciels différents.

DS32 montre un gros rectangle bleu à défaut d'une ligne plate. En réalité c'est parce que les débits ne sont pas du tout stables, et jouent au yoyo. Le graphe est en dents de scie tassé. Admirez les valeurs dans la zone de gauche : le débit va de 67Ko/s à 8.4Mo/s : autrement dit c'est le grand écart !



ATTO qui ici est configuré en mode "Direct I/O" (accès physique direct) donne des valeurs très correctes, les cartes CF et le DOM sont laissés sur place.



Ici par contre ce n'est pas la même chanson, c'est très instable et très en deçà des cartes CF. J'ai l'impression que dès qu'on fait appel à l'aspect logique ça s'écroule. Problème de firmware ?

Carte SD Transcend 64Go





Même chose qu'avec la carte SD Samsung de 16Go, le grand écart est toujours là même si le graphe à l'air moins vilain. On a l'impression que le chip Sintechi arrive à mieux gérer cette carte.



ATTO se comporte de la même manière qu'avec la Samsung 16Go. Il est à noter que le bench a du être relancé en raison d'une erreur la première fois :





C'est le jour et la nuit avec la Samsung 16Go. Résultats moins linéaires qu'avec une CF ou le DOM mais ça passe. On divise le temps d'accès par 50.

Bilan pour le PC Pentium


Le DOM et les cartes SD font ressortir des bizarreries aléatoires. Seules les CF sont dans les clous de manière constante. La carte Cisco offre la meilleure option stabilité/rapidité.

Le test en accès physique direct n'a pu aller au bout. :lol
Le module Sintechi n'a pû être détecté au BIOS après un RESET au bouton, visiblement planté, une coupure électrique a été nécessaire. Fail total.

Carte SD Transcend 64Go



Impossible de faire le test, le BIOS plante à la reconnaissance du module Sintechi au POST en raison de la carte de 64Go qui est surement trop grosse pour un BIOS Award 4.51 de 1998. Le BIOS du Zenith (AMIBIOS) devait laisser pisser de son coté en laissant la main à l'OS.

Enfin le DOM se comporte de manière complètement linéaire comme les CF. Les débits sont enfin maitrisés. Par contre ils sont en deçà de la carte Cisco qui pour l'instant reste en tête. Passons au SD...

Que dire ? Même en ATA-100 c'est toujours instable même si ça s'améliore bien (Minimum 9.9Mo/s).





Les débits en écriture d'ATTO avec les SD sont toujours aussi bons. De plus on ne retrouve plus cette latence de 30-50ms que l'on avait avant. Par contre en lecture la CF Cisco fait mieux. Sinon RAS.

Bilan pour le PC 486



Compte tenu de la faible vitesse (maximum PIO4) les 3 types de supports testés se comportent tous de la même façon et affichent les mêmes chiffres. Et ce que ce soit en mode "Normal" (500Mo max) ou en mode LBA. Je n'ai pas testé la SD en 64Go sur ce PC.

Conclusion générale



La carte CompactFlash



C'est la solution passe-partout qui fonctionne à tous les coups pour les 4 ordinateurs essayés. Revers de la médaille : le prix des cartes peut en rebuter plus d'un si on regarde le prix au Go.

Le DOM



Bonne surprise pour le modèle Kingspec acheté sur eBay. Les débits sont les mêmes que pour une carte CF. Par contre des résultats aléatoires en WDMA et Ultra-DMA33. Prévoir plutôt d'utiliser cela avec un contrôleur IDE ATA-66 ou supérieur. Aucun dysfonctionnement grave de constaté. Je recommande.

La carte SD



Difficile de faire une réelle conclusion concernant la partie SD car le contrôleur pouvant varier selon l'adaptateur que vous aurez chez vous, il se peut donc que les résultats présentés ne soient en rien identiques pour ceux qui n'auraient pas le même chip KTC FC1307A que moi. DiskSpeed32 montre quand même des résultats très aléatoires en terme de débit qui joue constamment au yoyo. De plus tout cela est gâché par une fiabilité déplorable (déconnexions, messages d'erreur). Résultats plus que mitigés pour ma part concernant ces cartes SD. Solution à réserver pour du stockage de documents mais pas pour le système.
